Having caught up with GRAMMY®-nominated artist Mild Minds (a.k.a. Benjamin David) ahead of the release of his title track "GEMINI" the time has finally come. The Melbourne-born producer has delivered his sophomore album, also named GEMINI, and we couldn't be more excited. When we last spoke, Benjamin was open about the "sophomore scaries" that often come with a second album, but he found his way through by reconnecting with the excitement that sparked the project in the first place. "I think it’s as simple as that. When you’re doing that, you have a lot of fun, and sometimes you’ll get to the end of an album or period and have made something quite different from what everyone was expecting." The album opens with the previously released single "I NEED U," an aching, atmospheric track that sets the tone with its emotive chord progressions and hypnotic vocal layers. From there, the title track that defined the whole album "GEMINI" pushes boundaries, foregoing repetition in favour of a continuous, trance-like evolution driven by staggered grooves and future garage influences. It's a bold move—and it pays off.
"TEARDROPS" acts as a bridge between Mild Minds' earlier sound and new sonic territory, laced with his signature vocal treatments and shimmering, sequenced chords. Then comes "1 DAY 2 LATE," diving into darker, more introspective themes of missed chances and fleeting moments. Midway through, "EMPTY SPACE" and "IN YOUR EYES" expand the album's emotional depth, balancing deep house textures with a raw, human pulse. "DNA ∞" showcases the evolution of the project, seamlessly merging underground dance elements with pristine, forward-thinking production.
The album's closing moments are where it all comes full circle. "STILL THINKIN' 'BOUT U" and "LAST CHANCE" round out GEMINI with a sense of finality, capturing the record's overarching theme: the search for meaning and connection within an increasingly digital world. It’s electronic music with a soul—introspective yet expansive, intimate yet designed for the dance floor.
