SPECIAL THANKS HOME ON ME COLLECTIVE - WORDS MAISIE JANE DANIELS
Home on Me Collective is thrilled to unveil its debut commercial exhibition, "Homebody," featuring the thought-provoking work of Zehra Marikar. Running from August 24th to 26th, 2024, at SPACE Mare St. (E8 3RH), this exhibition marks both Home on Me Collective's and Marikar’s first foray into the UK commercial art scene.
"Homebody" is a powerful solo show by emerging South Indian artist Zehra Marikar, who brings a fresh perspective to the art world. Marikar’s work explores the complex themes of gender identity, womanhood, and self-expression through striking paintings and evocative self-portraits. Her art not only reflects her cultural heritage but also transcends it, offering a nuanced examination of personal and collective identity.
As a multimedia artist and entrepreneur, Marikar seamlessly blends her reflections on home and identity with innovative artistic practices. Her work interrogates the female body and its place in contemporary society, drawing inspiration from artists like Frida Kahlo and Michael Armitage. Marikar’s unique style combines realism with elements of the monstrous and fantastical, allowing her to address themes often left unsaid and challenge the silence imposed on women.
The exhibition showcases Marikar's exploration of girlhood to womanhood, using her own family and personal experiences as a canvas for broader dialogues about identity and transformation. Her art vividly sways between past nostalgia and future aspirations, creating a compelling narrative that invites viewers to engage deeply with their own reflections and experiences.
Home on Me Collective, co-founded by Sahara and Zehra, is dedicated to making the arts accessible and inclusive. The collective supports emerging artists from diverse backgrounds through exhibitions, workshops, and online platforms.
