A SERENE ESCAPE: ARTISAN TERRARIUM MAKING COURSE WITH IV LIFESTYLE

WORDS MAISIE JANE DANIELS - SPECIAL THANKS PRICKLE PR

F Word embarked on an artisan terrarium making course with IV Lifestyle, which are held at Alfie’s Bar in Shoreditch.

Stepping into Alfie's on Bethnal Green Road felt like entering a tranquil oasis, a welcome retreat from the lively streets of Shoreditch. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the warm and attentive bar staff, who promptly offered us a complimentary drink. Naturally, I opted for a cocktail. Initially drawn to an Aperol Spritz to match the summer vibes, I was pleasantly guided by our Italian waiter, who suggested “The Red One,” a Campari-based alternative. His recommendation was spot on, and I thoroughly enjoyed every sip!

With drinks in hand, we were introduced to Patrick, the workshop leader. Patrick embodies the spirit of someone deeply connected to horticulture—down-to-earth, unpretentious, and genuinely welcoming. His relaxed demeanour set the perfect tone for the class.

Once the group had assembled, we headed to the basement of Alfie’s, where the workshop took place. Our group, consisting of seven people, including a couple, found our seats and prepared to begin. There were four pre-selected types of terrariums to choose from, and we had the option to work solo or share the experience with a partner.

The centrepiece of our creations was a bonsai tree, around which we learned the art of layering and planting. We were encouraged to personalise our terrariums, selecting from a variety of gravel colours and design elements like slate. It was inspiring to see everyone’s unique artistic flair shine through; the couple chose bold blue gravel, while I gravitated toward more earthy tones. Throughout the process, Patrick provided fascinating insights into these miniature ecosystems, along with essential tips for their upkeep.

As the class drew to a close, our terrariums were carefully packaged, ready to be taken home and displayed with pride. Once home, I added a small toy dinosaur to mine for an added touch of "razzle dazzle", and I’m eager to watch my terrarium evolve over time.

The class lasted 90 minutes—just the right amount of time for a thorough, un-rushed experience. As someone who appreciates meticulous detail, I found the pacing perfect. Our class began at 1pm on a Sunday, and my guest and I made a day of it by enjoying brunch and visiting the iconic Columbia Road Flower Market beforehand. It was a delightful way to spend the day, and I highly recommend the experience.

IV Lifestyle’s pop-up Shoreditch location at Alfie’s Bar (125–127 Bethnal Green Road, London E2 7DG) is an absolute gem. Additional London venues are expected to be announced soon. Prices start at £57.50 per person or per couple.
