American-born, London-based artist Joni has spent the past few years quietly picking up the pieces of herself, and now she’s ready to share them. Her debut album Things I Left Behind, out today, is like a beautiful meditation on memory, movement, and emotional excavation.
Written in the wake of a life altering breakup and relocation, the record traces the line between grief and growth with an honesty that feels like a form of catharsis. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Feist and Sparklehorse, Things I Left Behind doesn’t shy away from its imperfections, instead choosing to lean into them to create something tender, and human. Joni weaves a coming-of-age story that’s as much about letting go as it is about holding on to what matters.
Ahead of her headline show at SJQ on May 8th, Joni offer us a glimpse into a day in her life and reminds us of the beauty in simplicity.

F Word: If you had to assign a temperature, a colour and a taste to this single/EP/album, what would they be?
Joni: Temperature: The type of temperature where you’d sleep with the windows open but you still need a big blanket.
Colour: Dusty blue.
Taste: Someone once described my voice as sounding like a mouldy cream donut. It looks so sweet and appetising but then you take a bite and realise something has gone a bit off. That phrase became a touchstone for the album.

F Word: What genre could you see yourself experimenting with for a future project?
Joni: I really love Brazilian Bossa nova. I think that’s probably the genre I listen to the most and I’d like to make more music influenced by that style.

F Word: If you had to choose one component for a great song/EP/album, what would it be?
Joni: Lack of falsity or pretense
F Word: Fuck, marry, kill: album, EP, single?
Joni: Single, Album, EP

F Word: If you had to choose a new career completely outside of anything having to do with music, what would it be?
Joni: I’ve always wanted to write a book and would love to sit alone all day without interruption. So maybe a novelist?

F Word: What’s bringing the most joy to your days lately?
Joni: Being able to run again after a leg injury. Playing chess on my phone. My boyfriend peeling a mandarin for me every night.
F Word: What's your favourite F-Word?
Joni: Fable.
