Chinese-American DJ and producer HELANG cements her position as a rising powerhouse in the electronic music scene with her latest release, the 'Life Is Music', out now via her own label, Dauntless Records. This two-track project perfectly captures the duality of her artistry. As HELANG puts it, “The two tracks are a perfect juxtaposition—From The Back is sexy and badass, while Life Is Music feels emotional and vulnerable.”
To celebrate the release, F Word steps into A Day in the Life of this artist on the rise, uncovering what fuels her creativity and makes her one to watch.
F Word: If you had to assign a temperature, a colour and a taste to this EP, what would they be?
Helang: 60 degrees, medium blue, sweet and salty.
F Word: What was the biggest change you made to the EP during the writing process?
Helang: I changed the vocals in “From The Back” and made them more sultry. I wanted to make sure that the entirety of the two songs reflected myself as an artist and the direction I am headed musically.
F Word: What are you hoping people will take from this EP?
Helang: I want people to know that they can be whoever they want to be. It is also ok to be different and do things that aren’t necessarily traditional or seen as accepted by the societal norm.
F Word: What genre could you see yourself experimenting with for a future project?
Helang: Starting 2025, my sound will shift more toward techno—faster, darker, yet still sultry. Something not exactly within the likes of house and techno genres I could see myself experimenting with may be synth pop, maybe as a side project.
F Word: If you had to choose one component for a great EP, what would it be?
Helang: It would be the vocals for me. Don’t get me wrong, I believe it is possible to write a great song (especially in the house and techno landscape) without vocals, but vocals are truly so powerful and emotive. They speak to me and make things feel that much more relatable.
F Word: If you had to choose a new career completely outside of anything having to do with music, what would it be?
Helang: I would work at a dive shop / have my own diving practice where I would live in a place like Hawaii, exploring the oceans and teaching people how to scuba dive or free dive.
F Word: What’s bringing the most joy to your days lately?
Helang: Having good health- the energy to get work done and make music, feeling genuinely good about my body. Cherishing that and also being able to spend quality time with friends and family while feeling good physically.
F Word: What’s motivating you the most lately?
Helang: I’ve been doing a lot of inner work and healing lately. I came off of some medications that created some burden in my life but I’ve been pushing through. Restarting psychotherapy and starting hypnotherapy have been the key things to helping me stay positive lately.
F Word: What advice do you have for yourself for tomorrow?
Helang: Take things one day at a time.
F Word: The world would be better without?
Helang: Social media.
F Word: The world would be worse without?
Helang: Therapists.
F Word: Do you believe in manifestation?
Helang: Yes. We can’t force things to happen, but we can make our own luck.
