WORDS MAISIE JANE DANIELS - SPECIAL THANKS KARTEL MUSIC GROUP
Soul rising star CHERISE just dropped her latest EP, Butter, via Kartel Music Group, and it’s a buttery-smooth feast for the ears. Self-made from start to finish, this record is a masterclass in her dreamy, honey-soaked brand of Wonky Soul - perfect for unwinding with the likes of Steve Lacy, Moses Sumney, or Tierra Whack in the mix. Butter pulses with CHERISE's love for collaboration and keeps her rooted at the top of her game, evolving in step with the best in the scene.
Talking about the release, CHERISE shares, “Butter came together in a matter of months! I started writing after my birthday in February 2024, and we released the first single ‘My Cherie Amour’ by May. It’s named after the opening track on the EP, I didn’t give it too much thought! But when I mentioned "BUTTER" to my Mum she reflected on its important to Black culture - Cocoa Butter, Shea Butter are used every morning to moisturise. Butter has come to mean Black British to me. I had fun writing this EP with my producer Mates who are on the cover. After releasing my debut album, I wanted to reflect, experiment, soften up a bit and have fun”.
You know we couldn’t wait to dive deeper into Butter. So, here’s your exclusive peek into CHERISE's world - from a day in the life on set to our favourite "F" word yet. This one’s a must-read.
F WORD: If you had to assign a temperature, a colour and a taste to this EP, what would they be?
CHERISE: What temperature does Butter melt at? What colour is Butter? What does Butter taste like? Bush bash bosh… the answers are in the mouth already!
F WORD: What are you hoping people will take from this EP?
CHERISE: That change is a beautiful part of being an Artist. The transition is home, not the destination.
F WORD: If you had to choose one component for a great song, what would it be?
CHERISE: Devotion - honouring the art of song making to begin with.
F WORD: Go-to lunch on a studio/writing day?
CHERISE: Tescos or Sainsbury's meal deal of course. A tuna sandwich, without butter, which feels weird to say. Do you add butter to a tuna sandwich?
Anyway, I’ll have a Vanilla Crown as a dessert to go with my cuppa tea afterward, and an orange juice to drink with the tuna sandwich, because fish and citrus go well together (a French person told me, and I believed them).
F WORD: What’s bringing the most joy to your days lately?
CHERISE: Love
F WORD: The world would be better without?
CHERISE: Absolutes
F WORD: The world would be worse without?
CHERISE: Art
F WORD: What is your favourite F Word?
CHERISE: Fanny. Or the name Fanula. The latter could be use as an innuendo for the former...
